Alpha Mu has been a prominent force in the African American community here on campus. The Alpha Mu chapter has distinguished itself by putting on events unmatched anywhere else. Throughout history, Alpha Mu chapter is recognized for its outstanding civic and social programming throughout the entire academic year, including:

Community Service

With service being the thrust of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Mu takes great pride in its community service programming. The community service projects we take part in range from tutoring grade school students at Family Focus and the Salvation Army in Evanston and NU men study sessions to volunteering at the March of Dimes and providing panels with the students of Evanston Township High School. Each year, we seek to fulfill the charge of our General Convention by participating in Alpha’s national programs; Go-to-High School, Go-to-College, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People and Project Alpha.

Skee-Phi Week

One week out of the year, the Alpha Mu chapter collaborates with the ladies of Gamma Chi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for a week filled with activities. These activities traditionally include a fireside, a community service project, cosmic bowling, a party, other social outings, and a clothing drive.

Annual Homecoming Scholarship Ball

This annual event is held during Homecoming Weekend. Each year, merit scholarships are awarded to achieving college bound high school students. A Northwestern freshman also receives a scholarship. This formal event, which is free to students, began over twenty years ago, and it has become a tradition at Northwestern University. It is renowned as the only free ball held at Northwestern.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Candle Light Vigil

A member of Alpha Phi Alpha, Rev. Dr. King is remembered for his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. In conjunction with Northwestern University, Dr. King is honored through a series of activities involving guest speakers, community dialogue, and gospel song. This event is an annual tribute during his national holiday.

Alpha Week

For one week during the Spring Quarter, the brothers of Alpha Mu host several events ranging from barbecues, social outings, and community service projects to Powder Puff football. At the end of the week, we have a campus wide party as a small teaser to our main event in the spring: K.A.O.S.

K.A.O.S. With A Touch Of D.A.Z.S.

Our annual step show and party is the largest and oldest event of its kind in the Midwest. K.A.O.S. with a touch of D.A.Z.S. signifies 8 out of the 9 Black Greek Letter Organizations recognized by the National Pan-Hellenic Council. This event brings competition and support from the Black Greek Letter Ogranizations from all over the country. Recent years have featured popular radio personalities including Power 92’s HOT BOYZ and local popular disk jockey DJ Pharris.

Touch the Sky

Co-hosted with the women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., this program is aimed at giving high-risk high school juniors and seniors the resources they need to consider college as a viable next step in their lives. The program includes standardized testing information, financial aid assistance, and other college prep panels and workshops.

Black & Gold Bowl

This event was hosted for the first time in the Spring of 2008, with the women of Kappa Alpha Theta. Our inaugural flag football tournament brought participants out from nearly every Greek house, crossing council and cultural boundaries to provide the campus with a fun and enriching event. Both chapters have pledged to see it move forward to an even greater gathering.

The programming and service the chapter is involved with proves that Alpha Mu remains dedicated not only to the African American community of Northwestern University, but to the Evanston community as a whole.
